| This year many Taino people gathered to march in the Bronx Puerto Rican Day Parade as the theme of this year's parade was 'Las Tres Culturas' honoring the Taino, African and Spanish bloodlines. There were three times as many Taino marchers this year as last year. Many people are beginning to recognize and honor their indigenous blood which they had to hide for so long. We had people from many different Taino organizations as well as recording artist and poet, La Bruja join us for the march. I had my guamo (seashell trumpet) with me. The Taino have always used this for communication and or announcements. Many of us were gathered at the designated spot, but I thought I would blow my guamo so that other Taino people who were looking for us would hear and know where to find us. There was this one handsome Dominican man on the sidelines who came to march with the Taino people for the first time. This man was intrigued by the guamo. I think his ancestral blood was boiling. He asked me if he could try and I showed him how to hold it and how to blow it. You can see the look of pride on his face! He sounded the guamo like a true Taino warrior! This is what I love to see, the Spirit of the Ancestors were with us. They were helping this man to awaken to who he truly is. That is the fulfilment of the Ancestral Prophecy! We are going to march in the parade again next year. If you are Taino we want you to join us. Say it loud and say it proud! "Guakia Taino, Guakia Yaboa! We are Taino, we are still here!" |

First of all, let me say that your interest in the
Taino people warms my heart. Many people will
tell you they thought or were taught that the Taino
were extinct, but that is not true. If you are
reading this is because you are searching to
know more about your roots.
The Taino have a prophecy told long ago by the
Ancient Ones that said that the Taino would return
in 500 years. Here it is, 500+ years after
conquest and there is more interest in Taino
revival now than ever before. Is it a coincidence
that so many people are seeking information and
want to learn more about their roots? No, it is
not... It is the prophecy coming true.
Historical fact is that the Taino were in the
Caribbean long before the Spanish came and
conquered the land and the people. The Spanish
claimed the land by force and settled there, they
enslaved the Taino and when the Taino
population dwindled dangerously the Spanish
began importing slaves from the African continent
to do the work in the gold mines and on the
plantations.
There are many names to define the mixtures of
bloodlines in people from the Caribbean i.e.,
mestizo, mulatto or trigueno. Few people are
pure anything. But the Taino bloodline has
continued and still exists to this day.
