When Jenny Saldaña is not writing a play, directing, or acting, she’s lighting up the room- as a motivational speaker.

She’s an actress turned playwright turned motivational speaker. But most importantly she’s a Breast Cancer Survivor - - BC Jenny she calls herself. Also the name of her play: Pink: the Chronicles of BC Jenny.

She’s feisty; she’s funny; she’s a ball of fire; and she’s fearless. Unafraid and unabashed she openly discusses her brush with shhhhh “the C word”.

When I first met her she explained, “You know that the day after you’re diagnosed with breast cancer, you are considered a survivor? …. Yeah. Think about it. You survived one more day.”

I looked at her perplexed. She continues, “This is not according to me. This is the guideline for the American Cancer Society.”

We ate and drank, and talked about everything from sizzling fajitas to Celia Cruz- who also died of cancer, by the way. Jenny was choked up a little when talking about Celia. But when it came to talking about herself she was strong, confidant and almost defiant of this disease.

Subconsciously, I was wondering how such a young person can be a Breast Cancer survivor? Trying to grapple with “Jenny-Breast Cancer” / “Breast Cancer- Jenny” was so deep in my subconscious, that believe it or not, when I got up from the bar stool, I accidentally, or rather subconsciously, I bumped into her boobs. OMG! I elbowed her right into her boobs! I froze! And just looked at her. Jenny cracked a smile and said, “Don’t worry about it. That’s the one that I don’t feel anything in.”

If there is any moment I would want to take back, it would be that one. But she took it in stride and we continued our drinks and our very girly, sisterly, and loving conversation about our boobies.
