I was still busy writing and my mind a buzz –
thinking wow! what a life! Traveled the world, played
baseball, lived through WWII, made a whole lot of
money, lived through so much history, speaks
some Japanese and some French- I stopped
writing a little to practice my French with him:
Comment t’allez vous? Tres bien! Oh la-la!

So I finished writing and waited for more. And finally
I said: ¿Entonces qué pasó?

“Estaba en Cuba.”

I should have know what this meant but I didn’t so I
said: OK, so, ¿Qué pasó?

“No pude salir de Cuba.”

Oh! – How can I forget? But in my blissful
ignorance I continued: Pero ¿el beísbol?
¿No siguió jugando?

“Castro quitó la pelota. Quitó ¡to’! Vine aqui – soy
Marielito. Tengo 23 años aqui. Me quede sin nada.”
Well, I don’t think Don Piloto necesarily se quedo
sin nada- he has memories rich with history and
because of people like him we now have the
Sammy Sosas, A-Rod’s and Bernie Williams of
today. ¡Gracias, Don Piloto por su historia!

I asked him for a picture and as he graciously
accepted he carefully unrolled, dusted off and
donned his Memphis Redsox jersey and cap. He
wanted everything perfect so he asked for his ball
and his glove and smiled for the picture.

Don Piloto, what was your favorite pitch?

“La curva”

If that’s not a metaphor for José Piloto’s life I don’t
know what is!

When life throws u a curve - play ball!
Our mission is simple:

Inform
Inspire
Ignite!

Latinas everywhere!
Jose Piloto:
When Life
Throws You
A Curve ball
