So how did La Cholita begin Burlesque-ing? La Cholita was into rockabilly and that romantic era long forgotten: the 30’s and 40’s were glamorous, elegant, very feminine. She had tried to catch Burlesque shows with fake ID but she could never get in.
One day the Tease-o-Rama Burlesque Convention came to town and her mother decided to take her obsessed daughter. Well that was the beginning of it all! La Cholita was “enthralled” and “entranced”. La Cholita was a singer, dancer and performer, so Burlesque fit in perfectly! Burlesque encompassed all the elements that was La Cholita: the dancing, entertaining and most importantly the Glamour!
Burlesque has taken La Cholita all over the country performing. The performing eventually landed her as the main spokesmodel for Bordello Shoes, Burlesque inspired shoes sold in 80 different countries around the world! She never thought she would ever be a model with her voluptuous figure but now La Cholita’s pictures can be found all over the world! In fact she says about modeling, “It still feels awkward to me. It almost seems vain. I’m just standing in front of a camera. Compared to Burlesque that I’m in front of a live audience and I can feed off the energy.”
Burlesque has also taken La Cholita to the Red Carpet for the Emmy awards where she interviewed celebrities. She is also doing some behind the scenes wardrobe work for the likes of Amy Winehouse. La Cholita is also in the recording studio! If that wasn't enough for a grand congratulations, La Cholita also just gave birth to a baby boy!
So what is the Latin Queen of Burlesque’s opinion on the movie Burlesque? “Many people in the industry don’t like it because it is not true to the art form of Burlesque. But I think that anything that impacts Burlesque, and gives it publicity, is a good thing!”
La Cholita is the Latin Queen of Burlesque and no it’s not just a self - imposed name. La Cholita attained the title of Miss Viva Las Vegas 2007, which is the first time a Latina has won the title. But what is Burlesque exactly? And has La Cholita seen the movie Burlesque starring Cher and Christina Aguilera? “Burlesque is all about the tease,” explains La Cholita. “Technically it's like a variety show but it’s not cabaret. It’s a strip tease with a focus on ‘the tease’. If you’re not stripping, it’s just cabaret.”
Although stripping is a taboo subject she explains the evolution of how it became taboo. The Burlesque dancers of the 30's and 40’s may best be remembered with the huge feathers strategically fanned made famous by the iconic Sally Rand. Then the 50’s and 60's, you still had lots of glamour with Tempest Storm, who called her 44DDs, “her money makers”. But then the 70’s saw a change with neon bikinis and very tanned bodies. There was no “tease”. Now it was more taboo.
La Cholita, the Latin Blonde Burlesque Bombshell, defends Burlesque explaining that, "It is empowering to women because it's up to the individual woman what she wants to show or not show. Also it is accepting of all sizes and shapes. We are all beautiful. Size doesn’t matter, or even age. Sally Rand was dancing into her 70’s. Tempest Storm did a show when she was 80!” See MSNBC video of 80-yr Old Still Does It Classy here.
