Latinos on TV
The Power of Images

Why is Eva Longoria still the only Desperate Housewife without a Golden Globen or Emmy nomination. “Yeah? What’s with that?” as Stone Phillips said from Dateline NBC.

This year there are, not only, Latinos on TV, but Latino roles tambien. Latino characters on Prime Time include: the amazing Jimmy Smits on The West Wing as Matt Santos, a Mexican-American Democratic candidate for president. Wilmer Valderamma in That 70's Show as Fez, a foreign exchange student from an unspecified country, but we know he’s South American! Eva Longoria and the rest of the Solis family on Desperate Housewives. And ¡por supesto! ground-breaking George López show, a real Latino family.

There are 3 new Latino characters on Prime Time. Freddie Moreno on Freddie, Lola Hernández on Hot Properties, and Dr. Clemente on ER.

In this issue we recognize Freddie Prinze, Jr. for his gutsy move to have a new show with a non-stereotypical Latino role as Freddie the Puerto Rican bachelor chef. Read all about the new Freddie show.

The jury is still out on Sofia Vegara of Hot Properties who plays one of four real estate agents looking for love. Vegara’s character, Lola just divorced because her husband of 10 years came out of the closet. Lola is looking for love and doesn’t seem to realize the effect she has on men. Sexy, heavy-accented Lola can keep the accent - we love it! But we don’t want her to become a one-dimensional Latin spit-fire. We'll stay tuned!

The award-winning ER needed to shake things up a bit and brought in Puerto Rican/Colombian actor John Leguizamo as Dr. Clemente, the brilliant new head of County General’s emergency room. He will be introducing unconventional ideas and cutting–edge technology to the hospital. His unconventional ways began on day one when he pretends to be a patient just so he can see how the ER staff operates.

The new E-ring headlined by Benjamin Bratt is about patriotism, values and ideals of America, world politics, struggling nations, dictatorship, heroism and military action. Bratt plays Major "JT" Tisnewski in the Pentagon. It is exhilarating to see Benjamin Bratt, which is of Qechua Indian from Lima, Perú, resolve the number one mission which is survival of the state, an often delicate balance between protecting the homeland and protecting either all of mankind or the life of a lone soldier.

If that isn’t enough to get you from switching to Univisión just to see Latinos on TV, ESPN is going to air the 1st Annual Salsa Competition taking place in Las Vegas December 14 to 17, 2005. The competition is a universal dance competition featuring the best salsa dancers in the world surrounded by Latin stars and celebrity artists. The championship round will be televised on ESPN Deportes and ESPN International. Ladies, it is finally our turn to say, “Don’t bother me today- I’m watching ESPN!”

In this issue we talk to 4X World Salsa Champion Liz Lira on what it’s like to dance right into her new home. Read all about dancing diva Liz Lira La Rosa de Salsa .

This season, sit back, relax and watch TV. The power of TV comes from the messages that are broadcast into our psyche as we lazily sit back and hypnotically retain those images. Which is why there must be an honorable mention for Geena Davis in Commander-in-Chief. Talk about the power of the president, the power of the commander-in-chief, the power of images. Once a week, Americans get to see a woman as president of the United States. You can sit back, watching, dreaming, and believing that one day … just maybe … there will be a woman in the oval office.

In one episode, there was a situation in Colombia and The President, Mackenzie Allen, played by Geena Davis leaned forward to speak to the Latin American leader on a more personal level, to speak to him in Spanish! If you were sitting there watching, dreaming and believing that one day … just maybe ... there will be a … a… Hispanic in the oval office! AHHH! The power of television!
