I met her a long time ago online. I say “met” because it felt like I knew her. But actually I was just reading her work. She called herself “Canela Caramelo” and she was from Boston writing for this website I loved called candelaboston.com. There I was in Washington, D.C. laughing MAO reading about Canela Caramelo’s life. I kept checking on the website for the next part of her series. I couldn’t wait! She was fun, she had spunk, she made me laugh. I saw us hangin’ out together and having a blast! One day the website was gone. :( It no longer existed. I did searches and nothing. I felt a little sad because I missed Canela Caramela. So it goes on the internet.
Like the song says: No Se De Ella Ni Por Myspace But this was before myspace. And time went on and I moved on and I started my own website.
Little did I know what was going to happen next about 2 years later.
I was invited to be on a TV show in Boston- El Show de Fernandito so I arrived early at the studio b/c I was nervous. As I am doing my – hair and make up, this girl comes up to me and says – Hi happy to meet you. I’m Evelyn and I’m here to see if you need any help – maybe go over the interview and practice a little. She told me what to say and how to say it. She was a pro!
We started talking. She says – “I used to write for this website some time back. That was fun.” And that was it. But then as we kept talking I asked her– so what happened to the website u used to write for? “The girl that started it moved to Puerto Rico.” “So? Why couldn’t she just continue from Puerto Rico? Everything is done online!” “But for this website it was important that she was in Boston – you see it was called ‘candelaboston’.”
I couldn’t believe my ears! “I used to love that site!” “Really? Well, I was ‘Canela Caramela…”
Now what a chance meeting was this??? What are the chances?!!!
That wasn’t the end of the surprises though. She emailed me a few times and in one email –I will never forget it. The one that made me laugh out loud wrote to me perhaps one of the most scariest words in the English language. She wrote, “I have cancer.”
I answered back right way and said, “Girl, don’t be blurting things out like that on the internet! You scared the shit out of me! What are you saying???”
She apologized and said, “Sorry about that but that is how I deal with this thing. I am going to kick ass with this. It can not hold me down. But let me explain….”
I spoke to her over the phone and she explained everything.
Here is her story.
