We finally got on the Brooklyn Bridge and it was
simply beautiful!  Not just the unity of the people-
but the bridge itself.  Breathtaking!  It was a clear
day and the wind was blowing a cool breeze.
Not too strong but strong enough to wave all
those flags valiantly through the air.  Cars
passing on the Brooklyn Bridge honked their
horns in support as the people chanted, “¡El
pueblo unido - jamás sera vencido!”
I finally crossed the bridge and I made it near the
stage area where Assemblyman Adrián Espaillat
began to speak:  I came here as an immigrant from
the Dominican Republic and now I am a
representative of the people as an assemblyman!
¡Ha llegado la hora de hechar a las calles como hizo
el Reverendo Martin Luther King!

Long Island Assemblyman Phil Ramos:  ¡Que te
oigan en Washington, en Los Angeles!  ¡Que te
oigan!  Digan - ¡Presente!  Todos los Latinos digan -
¡Presente!  All the Chinese people say - ¡Presente!
My West Indian brothers and sisters say -
¡Presente!  We need to use this to make alliances.
African Americans – join with us.  You have a
history.  You are the trail blazers in civil rights.
Jewish people – you know the dangers here.  Bush
hear our voices!

Assemblyman Jose Peralta:  “¡El republicano
levantó este gigante!  ¡Hoy marchamos!  Pero
manana ... ¡¡¡votamos!!!  Juntos – ¡Sí se puede!”
And the crowd joined him in chanting: ¡Sí se puede!
At the end a few preachers told the people that this is
God's land!  And preached to the crowd.  And after a few
“Que Dios le benidga a todos.”  The rally was over.
Walking away from the stage I saw the best sign.  It said:

To cross the border:  $2,500
Subway fare:  $2.00
Morning coffee $1.00
My country’s flag:  $5.00
Having a green card:  PRICELESS
Ruben Diaz, Jr. son of the organizer of this event Ruben Diaz, Sr.:  “They tell
me today is April Fool’s Day.  I think we should make it a national holiday and
tell all those fools in Washington DC no to HR 4437!  ¡El enemigo es el silencio!
Hold up that flag and say with me:  I pledge allegiance to the flag…”  The crowd
repeats the American Pledge of Allegiance.

Ivette Clark stood there with her mother:  She came from Jamaica, the West
Indies.  We as Caribbean-Americans – we want to let everyone know that this
is a country of immigrants.  It was immigrants who built this nation!  English
speaking, French speaking, Spanish speaking, people from the continent of
Africa… It’s our time and we are going to let them know that henceforth and
forever more we will unite because this is our time now!

A Representative for the Koreans: “This is traditional wear I ‘m wearing.  But
don’t you think it is beautiful?  Don’t you think we are beautiful?  We are all
beautiful!”  Then he says in Spanish:  “Trabajo mucho, pero por poco dinero.”
The crowd roared!

A representative for the Haitians:  There are a million Haitians in NJ, Ct, NY.
We are going to win!  All of us together!  We are one people!  Leave no
immigrant behind!  Send a message to those immigrants in Washington -
remember they too are immigrants even if they came here before we did!

A few other associations were mentioned including: the Egyptian American
Group, the Bolivian Association, the Northern Manhattan Coalition and others.
