Puerto Rican Voting Rights

Chief plaintiff Gregorio Igartua de la Rosa has led a decade long legal
battle to obtain the right to vote for President in Puerto Rico filing three
lawsuits over the span of time.

In 2000, the dedicated Puerto Rican attorney won a U. S. District
Court ruling ordering a presidential vote only to have the First Circuit
reverse his victory days before the November election.
Coming back a third time, Igartua de al Rosa v. United States, U.S.
Supreme Court, led to a split in the First Circuit with Judge Juan
Torruella and Judge Jeffrey Howard dissenting.
The petition for the U.S. Supreme Court tells the story:
“The situation is so discriminatory that an American citizen can move
residence to any state, and vote in a Presidential Election.
If that same citizen moves residence to any country in the world he
can still continue to vote absentee, except that,
if he moves his residence to Puerto Rico,
he loses the right to vote in Presidential elections.”

A decision on whether the Supreme Court will accept the case
for review will not be made until 2006.

Reprint of Voter's Voice, a monthly election newsletter edited by Michael Richardson.
Richardson was Ralph Nader's ballot access manager in the 2004 Presidential election.
What do Hillary Clinton and
Jennifer López have in
common?

They both travel the world.
And they carry the right to vote
in presidential elections
by absentee ballot
with them where ever they go...
except if they go to Puerto Rico.

Student gets suspended for ...
¿¡speaking Spanish?!

16 year old Zach Rubio from Kansas City, MO
gets suspended for speaking Spanish
and with a warning from the teacher that
"this is not the first time"  we have told him not to speak Spanish
According to Zach:
We were in the, like, hall or whatever, on restroom break.
This kid I know, he's like, '
Me prestas un dólar?'
Well, he asked in Spanish;
it just seemed natural to answer that way.
So I'm like, '
No problema.'

The family along with their attorney are investigating possible
legal action for the violation of their civil rights.
It's a good thing they got an attorney

Your Utility Bill:  How American!

New law in Arizona says in order to vote
you must prove you're a US citizen.
But what cards do real red-blooded Americans have?
In Arizona, in order to prove citizenship  & exercise right to vote
you may show your driver's license,
which apparently, in Arizona, gives the right to drive and to vote
or you can show your proof of address
which  apparently, in Arizona, is synonymous with citizenship.
Therefore you may show 2 pieces of written proof,
such as utility bills.

House Republicans are looking closely at ending so called
birth-right citizenship or what critics call "anchor babies"
meaning any child born on U.S. soil is granted citizenship
even if that child's mother is an illegal alien.

H.R. 698 was introduced by
Rep. Nathan Deal R-GA Feb. 9, 2005
This bill is in the first step in the legislative process.
Introduced House bills go first to House committees that consider
whether the bill should be presented to the House as a whole.
The majority of bills never make it out of committee.

Incomprehensible Gringo

abierto: *green go*.  Sin embargo, *gringo* es una antigua palabra
española. Veamos cómo la define el diccionario académico (1884):

Gringo - Voz usada familiarmente.

incomprensible.

So don’t be incomprehensible!  Don’t be a gringo!  Practice your Spanish!
