| US Supreme Court News Protests at US Supreme Court The US Supreme Court is re-visiting school segregation. Quick history lesson: Brown v. Bd of Education 1963 said, “Segregation is inherently unequal”. Schools were under federal mandates to de-segregate. Fast forward 30+ years later. Schools no longer under the federal mandate. The schools in question here decided to continue with the federal mandate so that the schools will have a healthy mix of white and black students. A white student tries to get into his neighborhood school and gets denied because well, because he’s white. The white student is now saying hey –that’s discrimination! That’s what we’ve been saying for years! Demonstrators outside the courthouse held signs saying, "Equal education, not segregation" and "We won't go to the back of the bus, integration is a must." Decision expected by the summer. A similar case was decided in 2003 by the Supreme Court. Court decided colleges may use race to maintain racial diversity. Decision in Favor of Immigrant A person convicted of a felony may be deported under the Federal Immigration and Nationality Act. A 16 year permanent US resident was arrested for telling someone where to buy cocaine and charged for aiding & abetting the possession & sale of drugs. This is a felony in South Dakota, but a misdemeanor under the Federal Controlled Substances Act. Should he get deported or not? In an 8 to 1 decision, the Court ruled that a felony under state law but a misdemeanor under the Controlled Substances Act is not a felony for purposes of immigration. In this case it also means that he gets to stay in the US with his wife and 2 children. More Info: msnbc.com, supremecourtus.gov |
