Adiviname by Ricardo A. Aguirre, Esq.
"Excuse me Mr. Barretto." "Yea!" "Can I make a request?" "Dime" "Can you play "Adiviname"?" "Sorry negro, I already played it." "Yea, but you don't understand. You see that pretty girl over there with the white dress and the two guys talking to her?" "Uh huh." "Well I've been trying all night to dance with her and I haven't been able to. She goes to my high school, Monroe HS, and I really like her and I want to be her boyfriend, but she doesn't pay attention to me, so I asked her, well I actually begged her to dance with me at least once before she left tonight and she said that she would dance with me only if you played " Adiviname" again, so basically what I'm asking you is pleeeeaassssee play it again because this may be the first and only time I can touch her and maybe become her boyfriend. Will you play it for me? Please play it for me!" With those big eyes magnified out of those big black rimmed glasses, he placed one of his gorilla hands on my shoulder and said, "I'm sorry negrito, I can't." With that he took two steps turned his head around and barked above the DJ's music, "What's your name?" "Richie" He nodded and kept strutting towards the bandstand.
After the introductory notes Adalberto Santiago canto, "Adiviname que pienso, adiviname que pienso, cuando yo te estoy mirando..." I stopped cold, turned around and there was she was telling some guy "No!" as she walked towards the middle of the dance floor and waved me back. I don't remember where I put my jacket but I made it to the dance floor, embraced her soft left hand, placed my hand on the small of her back, pulled her close and danced. In July 2003, Wendy and I danced again at the "Wild Palm" in the Bronx after not having seen each other for over thirty years. She was visiting her mom. She lives in California. I was consulting with a client. I went over to the DJ and asked for "Adiviname" which he was kind enough to play. We danced, laughed, hugged. Thank you Ray Barretto.
