The ReadNex Poetry Squad creates timeless music and entertainment while educating. This group of four poets have gotten together to create Conscious Hip Hop.
Their CD release party was at the "mecca" for poets- the Nuyorican Poet's Cafe. There was a crowd lining up outside to see them. The show began with several artists that rocked the house with their politically conscience poetry.
If you haven't been to the Nuyorican make sure you go! It is where raw talent meets in the Lower East Side of New York City. Poets, hip hop artists, musicians, deejays, and sitting next to me was an older white gentleman with a long trench coat, hat, glasses, grey hair and he sat down to lay down his coat and hat and said he will be right back. He came back with a beer and took out his pad and charcoal- and started sketching. When he would finish his beer he would go and get another beer and continue sketching. I love the Nuyorican Poets Cafe! It is where art, all kinds of art - lives!
When it was time for the Read Poetry Squad everyone got up on their feet - standing room only- to listen to their poetry set to music.
Their songs range from the very catchy "Cold World" to the very militant "I write".
Their catchy song "Cold World", I promise you're going to love! The chorus says: "It's a Cold World but I know I'll survive! Abrigarse con amor and I hold my head high." It's in spanish and english, the lead is by Cuttz El Colombiano. The song says: Destozados / I thought we were hermanos / created equal / in the eyes of God/ respladados/ we live and die con las mismas manos
The chorus for "I Write" says, "I fight for Freedom, for Truth! Revolution! Revolution!" And revolutionary it is! The lead by Decora says, "I write for the remnants of freedom of speech / in a place where it's free to be dumb / but it costs to teach / where dreams are possible but hard to reach
"Ms. Education of Bling" has the super sweet voice of the only girl in the group but Freeflowin's message is anything but sweet: Bling is in or so we think. As we sink deeper into this mental stupor of complacency. Time is wasting, see? No time to be lazy. It's time to attack and yes abrasively. Let's take advantage of the few liberties given and become driven to reach intellectual sovereignty.
Those lyrics are a tough act to follow so I won't even try to find words to describe the song "Queens". See for yourself what Latin Translator has to say:
I want to hold the hands of mothers giving birth in my attempt to be closer - to God. Make them promises and keep them. Work less hours and come home to hold them. Watch the kids and have dinner ready when she comes home from shopping. Learn how to play spanish guitar. Play her favorite song while the bathtub fills with bubbles.
If those lyrics don't convince you to check out the Readnex Poetry Sqaud- nothing will! If you want to see them live- you have to wait till they come back from their Europe tour. Check them out now at myspace/readnex!
